Women’s basketball extend winning streak, men blow out Lions
Women
Currently on a three-game winning streak, the Trojans women’s basketball team looked to continue its red-hot form against the Ambrose University Lions.
The Trojans took on the Lions at the SAIT Bubble in Calgary on Saturday, Feb. 7.
It was a tight matchup, with the Trojans leading 37-32 at halftime.
The Trojans pulled away in the fourth quarter, holding the Lions to just 10 points to take a 75-61 win at home.
Kyler Varga led the offence for the Trojans with 19 points, along with seven rebounds and five assists.
With the win, the Trojans extended their winning streak to four games and moved into second place in the ACAC women’s basketball South Division standings with a 10-7 record.
Next, the Trojans will play back-to-back road games against Briercrest College on Friday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. and Saturday at noon. Both games will take place in Caronport, Sask.
Men
Ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest CCAA men’s basketball poll, the Trojans men’s basketball team battled the Lions on Saturday night at the SAIT Bubble.
Leading 49-29 at halftime, the Trojans scored 42 points in the third quarter and cruised to a 104-60 win over their city rivals.
Killian Yopa recorded an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double.
With the win, the Trojans remain in first place in the ACAC men’s basketball South Division standings with a 17-0 record.
Next, the Trojans will play back-to-back road games against Briercrest College on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Both games will take place in Caronport, Sask.
Women’s hockey drop two straight to Rattlers
Women
The Trojans women’s hockey team played home-and-home games against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers this weekend.
On Friday, Feb. 6, the teams met in Medicine Hat.
Second-year forward Sydney Hollman opened the scoring seven minutes into the first period.
The Rattlers tied the game late in the second period on a power-play goal by Gracie Soderstrom.
Midway through the third period, Teigan McAuley put the Rattlers ahead 2-1.
With just over one minute remaining, Soderstrom added a short-handed goal to give the home side a 3-1 lead.
Rookie Korie McGill scored with two seconds remaining as the Rattlers held on for a 3-2 win.
The teams met again Saturday at WinSport Arena in Calgary.
The Rattlers opened the scoring on the power play 13 minutes into the first period.
Veteran Lily Roberts tied the game 30 seconds later.
Sage Nohr scored the go-ahead goal with 1:30 remaining in the period to give the Rattlers a 2-1 lead.
In the second period, the Rattlers added goals from Sienna Vieira and Hayley Anderson to go up 4-1.
Jayda Summach made it 5-1 three minutes into the third period.
The Trojans added goals from Esther Boelema and Kaylan Easson later in the period, but the Rattlers secured a 5-3 win.
With the two losses, the Trojans sit in fifth place in the ACAC women’s hockey South Division standings with a 6-17 record.
Next, the Trojans will play two road games against the Lakeland College Rustlers on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:15 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. Both games will take place in Lloydminster, Sask.
Men
The Trojans men’s hockey team hosted Briercrest College on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7 at WinSport Arena.
On Friday, Brydon Bell gave Briercrest a 1-0 lead with three minutes remaining in the first period on a power-play goal.
Forward Austin Reschny tied the game at 1-1 in the second period.
Just over two minutes later, veteran Ryan Neumann gave the Trojans the lead.
Briercrest responded with two late goals from Justin Keck and Carter Peters to take a 3-2 lead.
In the third period, Briercrest added a goal 1:04 into the period from Daxton Budd and another 1:05 later to secure a 5-2 win.
On Saturday, Orin Olson put Briercrest ahead 1-0 two minutes into the game.
The Trojans responded with three consecutive goals in the first period — one from Brett Butz and two from Neumann — to take a 3-1 lead.
The second period featured six goals. Jackson Allan scored early for Briercrest, and four minutes later Cory King made it 4-2.
Allan scored his second of the game midway through the period to make it 4-3.
Neumann completed his hat trick 27 seconds later to restore the two-goal lead.
The teams exchanged late goals to end the period at 6-4 for the Trojans.
In the third period, Keck scored a power-play goal, but the Trojans secured a 6-5 win.
Neumann was also named the Trojans’ male athlete of the week after recording six points in two games.
With the split, the Trojans remain in second place in the ACAC men’s hockey South Division standings with a 15-5 record.
Next, the Trojans will play back-to-back games against the NAIT Ooks on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6:45 p.m. at WinSport Arena in Calgary and Saturday at 6 p.m. in Edmonton.
Women’s volleyball split with Lions, men drop two straight
Women
The Trojans women’s volleyball team took on the Ambrose University Lions this past weekend.
On Friday, Feb. 6, the teams met at Rally Pointe in Calgary.
The Trojans won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-22.
The Lions responded by winning the next two sets 25-22 and 25-15 to force a deciding fifth set.
The Trojans won the final set 15-10 to take the match 3-2.
Veteran Sarah Henriksen led the Trojans with 13 kills on 30 attempts.
On Saturday, the Lions won the first set 25-21 before the Trojans responded with a 28-26 win in the second.
The teams again split the next two sets to force a fifth set.
This time, the Lions prevailed 15-10 to win the match 3-2.
Henriksen was named the Trojans’ female athlete of the week after recording 24 kills, 16 digs and 16 service aces over the weekend.
With the split, the Trojans sit in third place in the ACAC women’s volleyball South Division standings with a 9-6 record.
Next, the Trojans will host Briercrest College on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble in Calgary.
Men
After splitting games with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers last weekend, the Trojans faced the Lions in back-to-back matches.
Game 1 took place Friday night at Rally Pointe.
The teams split the opening two sets, with the Lions winning 25-11 and the Trojans taking the second 25-22.
The Lions won the next two sets to take the match 3-1.
On Saturday, the Lions swept the Trojans 25-18, 25-18 and 25-19 to win 3-0.
With the two losses, the Trojans remain in last place in the ACAC men’s volleyball standings with a 3-12 record.
Next, the Trojans will host Briercrest College on Friday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble in Calgary.
